10 Steps to Improving Indoor Air Quality
Maintaining clean air throughout the home is essential to the health of yourself and your family. Germs and diseases are often spread through dust mites and mold in the air. Indoor air quality usually worsens during winter when most windows have to be kept closed. However if you want to keep the air in your home clean and fresh all year round here are 10 steps to do so.
1- One of the easiest sure ways to improve indoor air quality is to invite nature into your home. Green is clean and some green plants help to recycle and clean the air.
2- Cigar and cigarette smoke is toxic and so smoking indoors ruins the air and home health. Avoid smoking indoor and when you really have to do it like during winter stay close to dehumidifiers or a ventilation fan.
3- Use an air filter to help improve the indoor air quality. Make sure you use a quality air filter with a hepa filter and always keep your furnace and air filters clean.
4- Only use safe green cleaning products. Avoid cleaning products containing harmful chemicals and come with warnings. These chemicals get free and pollute the indoor air quality.
5-If you have pets then you should vacuum more often to protect your home health. Keep litter boxes clean, and make sure your pet is not bringing in any mites or fleas.
6- Store toxic materials like paints and other solvents outside the house.
7- Vacuum and dust regularly. Be sure that your vacuum uses a hepa filter as this removes pollutant and dust mites from the air.
8- Make sure your home is properly ventilated to allow fresh air to come in and serve as a natural dehumidifier. During winter though, it is best to invest in a quality dehumidifier to save on energy bills.
9-Keep shoes outside. Shoes carry dust mites and pollutants which reduces indoor air quality. Either keep them outside or dust properly before taking them inside.
10-Use clean ventilating fans where necessary. When the fans uses an air filter make sure you use a hepa filter to clear minute particles and dust mites.
