Dangers of Ionic Breeze Air Cleaners
Maybe you've seen those late night infomercials and heard about those popular and expensive ionizing air cleaners that are supposed to clean and improve the quality of air inside of your homes and office. Consumers have been purchasing these pricey air cleaners thinking they are getting the best product for their money. In reality they may be causing more health problems for themselves then they realize.
In recent reports, after testing these ionizing air cleaners for the removal of dust, cigarette smoke, pollen and other pollutants from the air in their homes, they proved to be ineffective in removing any of these pollutants from the air at all. In fact not only do these supposed “air cleaners” not clean the air properly, but they have proven to emit increased exposure to ozone into the air. Samples were taken two inches from these ionizing air cleaners and were found to be producing 150 to 300 parts per billion of ozone.
The Lung Biology Research Center at University of California in San Francisco stated that people with asthma or respiratory allergies were especially sensitive to these increased amounts of indoor ozone. It produces an effect in the airways of the lungs and can cause permanent injuries to the airways if people are exposed to these ozone levels at even a rate of 100 part per billion. It can also produce effects in normal people without any respiratory problems such as shortness of breath or wheezing. Studies were also done by researchers at UCSF and Yale University, these reports stated even small amounts of ozone in the home can reduce lung function and increase the sensitivity to allergenic pollutants in the air.
The bottom line is if you are trying to improve the allergies and quality of air inside your home, for yourself or a loved one, purchasing an ionic air cleaner is not recommended. A better option is to invest in a quality air purifier or dehumidifier for your home. Whole House Air Cleaners and Portable Air Cleners are available from sources like IAQsource.com. These can be purchased with HEPA filters, which remove 99.9% of contaminants in the air.
